The Heart of prayer

The Heart of Prayer

Nothing is impossible

The most important thing the disciples of Jesus wanted him to teach them was how to pray.  They realised that the most important link for Jesus was between him and his Father.  He taught them to pray to God as their Father just as he did. Later he told them that they could pray in his name and that he would be interceding for them himself as they continued to be about his work in making and growing disciples to change the world.

We can do nothing on our own but we can do everything with God.  When the disciples struggled with praying Jesus encouraged them to keep on keeping on. When the going gets tough the tough get praying.  And prayer is definitely at the heart of the Transforming Wigan movement.  The House of Prayer is the name for the overall initiative and The Order of Prayer comprises those disciples who sign up to a specific rhythm of life together for a year.  The 'TryPraying' scheme continues to be the means by which we seek to engage everyone in Wigan with the love, goodness and compassion of God who draws near to those who draw near to him in prayer.

Use this form to write out a prayer and send it to us so that we can pray it. This entirely confidential, we aren't asking for your email address, and you don't need to give your name if you don't want to.

House of Prayer

The House of Prayer is a network of prayer across Wigan bringing together every individual and group engaged in regular prayer and intercession.
We are currently seeking a physical place – a suitable building in the heart of Wigan – to use as a base for the prayer network.
In June 2017 we were given temporary use of a small house for 40 days of 24/7 prayer.  266 people took part in this and there is a growing movement of people wanting to keep this going by keeping prayer central to all that we are doing to accomplish the vision.

Order of Prayer

In November 2016 we launched the first Order of Prayer.  24 people committed to a simple WAY OF LIFE and a regular rhythm of prayer and fasting. The aim is to have 100 people in this order by the end of 2017. If you are interested in joining the Order drop us an email and we will put you in touch with the leaders so you can explore it further..

The WAY OF LIFE for the Wigan Order of Prayer

I will offer my life to God each day as a living sacrifice, seeking to be transformed by Jesus Christ.  I will dedicate 30 minutes every day to praying and seeking God's voice for Wigan as we hold to our vision to help one-in-ten people in our borough to be on the journey of following Jesus by 2022.

I will gather with other members of the Order every month and contribute in some way to monthly 24 hour Vigil of Prayer

I will fast from something regularly to heighten my hunger for God.  I will do this: personally every week and with others in the Order every month.

I will feed on the Word of God every day.

I will meet every month with another member of the Order to give an account of myself and to share honestly about how I am living out my commitment.

Try Praying

Most people have prayed in moments of desperation. But was someone listening? Was the prayer answered? People find praying helps and say that they have had their prayers answered.  In fact 20 million adults in the UK say that they pray and 13 million of them say that they pray at least once a month wtih 9 million praying every day.  One in three people believes God will answer their prayers.

TryPraying is a resource especially for those who have no church connection but are open to find out about God. The TryPraying booklet - also available as an app - is a 7-day prayer guide and is now being used by many to pass on to friends and family with a few words of encouragement. Why don’t you try praying for a week and see what happens in your life?

Go to www.trypraying.co.uk to download the app or to get your free copy of the booklet.
